Standard Hub Kit

Compact, reliable, and simple to install. The motor sits neatly inside your rear wheel hub — no touching your chainring, cranks or gears. Perfect for everyday commuting on flat to moderate terrain.

Why choose a geared hub kit?

🔧
Simplest Installation of All Our Kits
A geared hub kit replaces your existing rear wheel with a motorised one. You don't need to touch your chainring, cranks, or gears — a small cadence sensor clips to the chainstay, and that's all. If you can remove a rear wheel, you can fit one of these kits. It's the most approachable conversion for someone doing it for the first time.
🌧️
Splash-Proof by Design
The motor sits inside the wheel hub — well away from road spray and surface water. Unlike a crank drive motor positioned low at the bottom bracket, a hub motor is much less exposed on wet roads. All our kits are splash-proof; you can ride in heavy rain without concern.
⛓️
You Can Ride Home with a Broken Chain
Because a hub motor drives the wheel directly — not through your chain — a snapped chain won't leave you stranded. You can use the throttle or pedal assist to get home safely, even without a functioning chain. A genuinely useful safety net for long commutes.
⚙️
Less Drivetrain Wear
Because the motor doesn't drive through your chain and gears, it causes far less wear on those components. Your chain, cassette and chainring last much longer than with a crank drive kit — an important advantage for daily commuters who put on big mileage.

Hub kit vs Crank Drive

This Kit
Standard Hub Kit
Easiest installation · commuter favourite
  • Simplest to install — no BB tools needed
  • Less drivetrain wear
  • Protected from road splash
  • Ride home on throttle with broken chain
  • Ideal for flat to moderate terrain
  • Lower cost than crank drive
Alternative
Crank Drive Kit
BBS01B / TSDZ8 · for hilly terrain
  • Drives through gears — better on hills
  • More powerful climb on steep gradients
  • Slightly higher drivetrain wear
  • More complex installation
  • Higher cost
  • Best for hilly areas or heavier riders

Generally: if you're in a hilly area, consider a crank drive. For flat or moderately hilly commuting, a hub kit is excellent value and much simpler. Not sure? Call us and we'll advise honestly.

Installation in 4 steps

1
Remove your existing rear wheel
Release the quick-release or undo the axle nuts. If your bike has a derailleur, shift to the smallest sprocket first to make removal easier.
2
Fit the motorised wheel
The motor wheel comes pre-laced and is installed in the same way as your original wheel. Ensure the cable exits cleanly toward the frame and route it up to the battery.
3
Mount the battery on your downtube
The battery cradle fits to your frame's downtube. You may need to drill two M5 rivnuts — a 6.5mm drill bit is all that's required. Email us a downtube photo before ordering so we can confirm the right battery shape for your frame.
4
Connect cables and fit the display
All connectors are waterproof push-fit. Mount the LCD display and throttle on your handlebars, connect the brake sensors (supplied), and you're ready to ride. Total installation time is typically 1–1.5 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Will it work on my bike?
Hub kits work on most standard-frame bikes with 20", 26", 27.5" or 700C rear wheels. They are not suitable for bikes with internal hub gears (Shimano Nexus, Sturmey-Archer etc.) or carbon rear triangles. Please email us at kits@wooshbikes.co.uk with a photo of your bike before ordering — we'll confirm compatibility quickly.
Is a hub kit good enough for hills?
On moderate hills, yes — with pedal assist you'll manage most gradients comfortably. On steep hills (10%+), a hub motor can struggle compared to a crank drive, because it can't use your gears to multiply torque. If you live in a very hilly area, we'd recommend considering a crank drive kit like the TSDZ8. Give us a call and describe your typical routes — we'll advise honestly.
Can I keep my existing gears?
Yes — an 8-speed freewheel is fitted to the motor wheel as standard, compatible with most rear derailleurs. Your existing shifters and derailleur remain untouched. If you have an unusual drivetrain setup, let us know before ordering.
Is it really possible to ride home with a broken chain?
Yes — because the motor drives the wheel directly and not through your chain, a snapped chain doesn't disable the motor. You can use the throttle to power yourself home at up to 15mph, and use gentle pedalling for assist. A genuinely useful feature for long-distance commuters.
What battery capacity should I choose?
As a rough guide, 36V 10AH gives approximately 30–36 miles on flat roads. A 15AH battery gives approximately 45–54 miles. Range depends on terrain, speed, headwind, and rider weight. If you're unsure, call us and describe your typical daily ride — we'll recommend the right capacity for you.
What is your warranty and returns policy?
Full warranty is included. If we cannot fix a kit under warranty, we will offer a refund based on the condition, age, and mileage of the kit. Faults caused by incorrect installation or misuse are not covered. Please see our Sales Conditions for full details.
